My Story

28 Sep 2021

Blame it on Steve. ‘Mars’, as we call him – partly because of his name but also because he looks like a Martian if you see him in his helmet with its spiky cable-tie antennae. Scares away the magpies, he says. (Sorry, mate, but isn’t a helmet alone protection enough?)

I dust off the op shop Shogun and hit the trails. He’s got me out pedalling into the wind (yes, I said pedalling), pushing my luck for someone who no longer takes Baby Boomer as a compliment. (That’s me in my Covid-19 Green Hornet lockdown disguise hiding the wrinkles.)

Bloody hell, it’s crowded out here in Plague Town. Yum-mum bums in cling-wrap potato sacks, muscle boys with tatt sleeves on skinny legs; kids on shiny heavy metal bovver bikes sans road sense, hipsters under headphones winging along on speed regulator-immobilised e-skateboards riding the Banzai Pipeline. Us golden oldies can only raise eyebrows and curse behind masks as we rings da bell and slalom between prams and joggers. Welcome to the most lockdownable city in the Covid world.

Just as the Mensa Society freedom picnics block our paths (in more ways than one), our exercise leash is extended from 5km to 10km to 15km! Mars is inspired and flicks me a wobbly handpass that bounces about like a March hare as he stands up on his pedals and prances into the lead. We’re out riding for our own good anyhow, he says, so why not put the meter on and raise some dosh for The Great Cycle Challenge? That’s Mars, plugged in socially and sociably – and ever the tease.

It takes a half-rotation of the front wheel to appreciate this worthy cause. Anyone who has had more than one birthday, let alone 60 or 70, knows these kids could do with a dink. I take the challenge and raise him one saddle and two handlebars.

Follow us on our rides for a month and we will not only show you around the Melbourne gulag, we’ll raise real money for some fair dinkum kids. (Check out Stephen Marsland on this site and collect our joint training postcards!)
