I'm Riding For

Beverly Nixon

Bev, or Aunty Bev as she was know was a strong, determined, inspirational woman who was sent home to die after a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer many years ago now. After contemplating this future for a few days she decided to fight back and she won! She not only taught me how to play bagpipes but also the value of life and the attitude needed to live it to the fullest. Sadly Aunty Bev passed away on 28th July 2018 at the age of 81. She took a great interest in and really appreciated my role in helping children fighting cancer, and so I am going to ride this October in her memory. RIP Aunty Bev

My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

Well Marge, the rains aren’t ‘ere yet! So off I went Jacaranda Hunting 💜💜💜 They are starting to get some colour and am sure hoping the rains when they eventually turn up don’t ruin their display before I get to see them in all their glory.

On another note, I had resigned myself to the fact I was not worthy of being swooped by a magpie like all the other riders when ….. nek minut!

  • Beat the Rains Rose Garden Ride 🌧🌧
    20 Oct 2021

With rain predicted for about a week I went for a quick ride this morning before the black clouds opened up. Parramatta Rose Garden is looking & smelling spectacular at the moment. A few big drops of rain sent me scurrying for cover while I put my rain jersey on only to stop a few minutes later. The sun came out, the rain jersey came off and I continued on down the river. Not game to venture as far as usual but it was a lovely ride anyway. Lockdown must be over. The cycle path has been lonely the past couple of rides compared to the last 18 months 👏 👏 👏

Thank you all once again for your amazing support! You guys certainly get me out riding in days when it would be easy to stay inside “in case” it rains ! ♥️

Thank goodness lockdown is over - a hair cut is long overdue ✂️ ✂️ ✂️

  • Gorgeous Spring Ride after Work
    17 Oct 2021

After spending all day at work longing to be out in the gorgeous fresh air, blue skies & sunshine ☀️ I came home, the weather didn’t change, as it so often does and I got a lovely 17km Parramatta River ride in. So thankful that I have this river to ride along. The salt air on the light breeze was so invigorating!

Unfortunately, whilst my head said ‘ your outside, go for a ride, you don’t have to be home until dark’ , my back and legs said ‘what were you thinking numbnut? We have worked all day and haven’t recovered from your last ride yet!’

Despite this it was a lovely evening ride with the moon coming up over the river 🌙

110 km done and only halfway through the month 🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️

Thank you all so much for inspiring me and supporting the researchers to help the kids lead better lives ♥️♥️♥️

  • Great Day for the Ducks 🦆 ☔️
    15 Oct 2021

Most of you are probably thinking I am a fair weather rider, and you would be right to do so 😎 ☀️ 🚴🏻‍♀️

Kids fighting cancer don’t get to choose the easy route so today after I turned up at work only to find out I wasn’t rostered on, I went home and decided to take a gamble 🎲 on the weather holding out.

Turns out I won ….. twice 🙌 I had a ride down the Parramatta River where I got slightly damp about 5 km before I got back to the car then the sun came back out so I drove down to Bicentennial Park and rode another 10 km before making it back to the car just as some half arsed tornado 🌪 thing tried to take me out again!! I got home dry, intact and bike was in the shed before the rain came tumbling down for the second time 🍀 🍀 🍀
