I'm Riding For

Beverly Nixon

Bev, or Aunty Bev as she was know was a strong, determined, inspirational woman who was sent home to die after a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer many years ago now. After contemplating this future for a few days she decided to fight back and she won! She not only taught me how to play bagpipes but also the value of life and the attitude needed to live it to the fullest. Sadly Aunty Bev passed away on 28th July 2018 at the age of 81. She took a great interest in and really appreciated my role in helping children fighting cancer, and so I am going to ride this October in her memory. RIP Aunty Bev

My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

Well no rain, no stacks, no flats and no sunburn ! Can't get any better than that!! Yes you can !!!! Thanks to you amazing people not only have we raised over $1400 for research to help Fight Kids Cancer but I have ridden 130 km this month which is 30% further than I ever dreamed I could !! A very BIG thank you to everyone who has supported me by believing I could achieve this goal, your patience whilst I did it (I'm not a fast rider haha) and most of all for donating to this amazing Challenge for a brighter future for Kids with Cancer !! The month is not over yet so I will see if I have any more km's in me once I recover from today, In the mean time it would be amazing if you could share my page with your family and friends and see if we can raise as much as possible to help the amazing kids out with brighter futures xx

  • Narrabeen Lagoon
    22 Oct 2020

Another lovely pre summers day in Sydney meant an easy 12 km around Narrabeen Lagoon. After looking like it was going to rain the sun came out and it was a very pleasant 25 C. No sunscreen and no sleeves - Yay!! And more importantly no sunburn!! Narrabeen Lagoon has some shaded rainforest track, some bush track, some just regular bike path. Today I met up with the awesome folks from Sydney Wildlife Rescue and had a tour of their van. Only 7 km to go !!! Thanks to all of you who have donated to this very worthy cause and encouraged me to keep on riding xxx

  • Parramatta Park Loop
    22 Oct 2020

Yesterday I had another aborted ride down the Parramatta River when my co-pilot took a wrong turn, got lost and ended up back at the Wharf! Not to be completely undone we then went back to Parra park and did a loop before heading home for Roast Lamb on the BBQ.

We bumped into Dom from the CMRI and had a great chat and checked out the locals who were catching their last few zzzz's before waking for breakfast

  • Cook's River Ride
    17 Oct 2020

After the Heritage Ride was cancelled yesterday due to the rain which didn't eventuate I was determined to get out and ride today. We had a very pleasant ride down the Cook's River from Steele Park to the Captain Cook Bridge and back making it into the car just before the heaven's opened up! It was a nice warm day cooled by the gale force head wind we rode the return journey in but we loved every minute of it. Good to ride a new route :D Thanks to all of you for sponsoring my rides and encouraging me to get out and about when I probably wouldn't due to my back being particularly sore this week - the kids don't get a day off so neither do I !!

  • Failed River Ride
    29 Sep 2020

Aiming for about 24 - 30 km ride down the River from Parramatta to Homebush after work today. However, it was not to be. Phone died so Strava didn’t record full ride. Back sore after working all day and big ride on Sunday but keen to keep going. Bike seat kept collapsing on me and got sick of fixing it and riding with my knees up around my ears so cut ride short after 16 km. Only 1 photo today, shrug.

Gi walawa and malawaia at Baramada (Please stop here and rest at Parramatta)

  • Bridges of Parramatta Heritage Ride
    27 Sep 2020

A very pleasant 33 km with Paul and Anthony from Parramatta Heritage Rides this morning.

The Lennox Bridge is a heritage-listed sandstone single arch bridge across the Parramatta River, located in Parramatta in Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The bridge was designed by and built under the supervision of David Lennox, the first Colonial Superintendent of Bridges using convict labour between 1836 and 1839. The Lennox Bridge is the third oldest surviving masonry bridge in New South Wales.[2] The bridge carries Church Street, the main north-south street of Parramatta's central business district.[1] It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.[5],_Parramatta
