My Story

5 Sep 2019

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Perhaps foolishly I’m pledging to try and ride the equivalent distance from home to Arkaroola which is 1392km’s via Echuca, Mildura, Lake Mungo, Menindee, Broken Hill and Yunta before arriving at Arkaroola. Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to help give kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save these little tackers lives.

Thanks for your support.

  • 31 days in October.
    31 Oct 2019

Today my Great Cycle Challenge came to an end with my last ride for October being a ride around the block.

Yes there are 31 days in October and it's something I'm not likely to forget too soon. During the month I've ridden alone and with friends in places such as Pygery, Adelaide, Ottoway, Henley Beach, Melbourne, Williamstown, Shepparton, Kialla, Karramomus, Balmattum, Kelvin View, Molka, Longwood, Nagambie, Avenel, Benalla, Boho, Arcadia, Goorambat, Mount Buffalo and Heathcote to Bendigo return on the O'Keefe Rail Trail. If you have been following my progress closely you would have also noted some indoor training rides as well.

Regarding my set challenge to ride a virtual distance of 1392 kilometres which is the approximate distance from home to Arkaroola in South Australia, I arrived in Arkaroola this morning and my final tally of 1403 kilometres saw me continue on to the 'top of the world' at Sillers Lookout (see image licensed to Joy Engelman https://www.panoramio.com/photo/95070963).

Arkaroola in South Australia is such a special place that everyone should have it on their bucket list to visit at least once. Make the journey, spend some time reconnecting with what's important and marvel at the rugged beauty of outback South Australia. Fuel prices at Arkaroola which is a privately run sanctuary are currently sitting at around U91 Un-leaded - $1.87, U95 and U98 - $2.07 and diesel is ~$1.94 per litre. Given the distance from Adelaide and the condition of the rugged, corrugated and often dusty roads leading to Arkaroola, I think the price is entirely reasonable.

  • A world of contrast, Mount Buffalo and Lake Frome.
    27 Oct 2019

Over the weekend the Secrest Squirrels and I ascended to the upper peaks of Mount Buffalo (Cresta Valley) to be greeted by icy cold winds and the remnants of last seasons snow still on the ground.

Such is the contrast, my virtual ride is now up to 1269km's which places me at the southern end of Lake Frome approximately 125km's from Arkaroola. A quick check of weather for the region shows temperatures during the day reaching almost 30degC...not much chance of snow on the ground there!

Yesterday's ride also marks yet another donation to be extracted from the JG beer fund. Thanks Jimbo

    25 Oct 2019

You see all the sights on a bike.

On yesterdays virtual ride to Yunta I stopped in to play a game of 6 dice with the locals but we didn't have an excavator!

My next port of call after Yunta is Lake Frome which when rarely full averages 0.5 metres in depth but holds one cubic kilometre of water!

  • Hello SA!
    23 Oct 2019

Update; 1020km ok so finally I've crossed the virtual border into South Australia and I'm currently rolling along about 74km northeast of Yunta on the Barrier Highway.

Timelines are still tight as I need to cycle at least 47km per day to achieve my goal distance 1392km or greater.

Tonight's image was last night's beer best described as an ice cream beer...well it certainly looks the part and the taste...tropical with a fruity hop flavour, different but nice.

    Cheers

  • The value of one kilometre.
    21 Oct 2019

There's been a bit of banter between a cycling mate and I over his very generous offer to fund my cycling efforts by donating $20 from the beer fund for every 100 kilometres I ride over 1000 kilometres!

24 hours ago I thought I had this in the bag, but now as fatigue sets in after a big weekend of cycling I'm not so sure. So what is the value of one kilometre I hear you ask? Well my goal I've set is to ride 1392 kilometres the distance to Arkaroola) in October.

    So there's a few different ways to look at this;

    1. ride 1300km and each km is worth 4.61cents

    2. ride 1400km and each km is worth 5.71cents

    3. there's a number of different ways to look at option 3 and this is how I see it rolling...as far as $$ the km's between 1301-1399km are virtually worthless unless I ride that final kilometre to acheive 1400km. Yes I like the third option the best, it helps dull the fatigue thinking about 1 kilometre being equal to $20 beer dollars! Anyone else with some beer, coffee or soft drink dollars they'd like to donate? If you're wondering how the virtual ride is going, well I'm now at Broken Hill.

    Onwards and upwards.

    The value of one kilometre.

  • What do 45 kilometres, plastic bottle lids and childhood cancer have in common?
    18 Oct 2019

All three are challenging in their own way!

Try riding 45 kilometres every day for 31 days in your spare time and you soon realise rest days, easy days and time are your enemy!

Plastic bottle lids (Lonesy and the Lids4Kids project) are being collected everyday. These little plastic suckers are eventually 3D printed into mobility aids for child amputees in developing countries. The challenge is helping remove the little plastic seal in the milk bottle lids and cleaning the manky ones.

Finally, imagine how challenging and exhausting it is for kids and their families fighting childhood cancer every single day!

Your donation helps kick cancers butt and gives kids a future where they don't have to fight for their lives.

    Thanks for your support

  • The virtual route explained.
    16 Oct 2019

So in my Great Cycle Challenge introduction and blog updates I've mentioned this virtual ride from home to Arkaroola via Mildura, Lake Mungo National Park and Broken Hill.

Following this morning's ride my total kilometres ridden since the start of October is now up to 600km which means I've now passed Mildura and stopped near Lake Mungo National Park (see image). To celebrate the acheivement and to give you a sense of Lake Mungo I've added a very interesting Australian Geographic video of Lake Mungo National Park. I trust you will enjoy it, I hope one day I'll return to Lake Mungo to explore the dunes. But until then it's onwards to Lake Menindee and Broken Hill.

  • Climbing, fatigue and distance test.
    12 Oct 2019

So after yesterdays 100km ride, today's test was to ride another 100km climbing in the Strathbogie Range's with the Secret Squirrels and a wee bit of fatigue in the legs. The fatigue test is part of my preparation for a special 'Secret Squirrel' cycling event to be held in the very near future.

Regarding my virtual ride to Arkaroola...my calculations (440km) place me about 36 kilometres southeast of Mildura in NSW and almost a third of the way to my goal of 1392 kilometres in a month. Just keep the pedals turning.

  • Progress update, day 11.
    11 Oct 2019

Well it's been a slowish start and I'm behind schedule by perhaps 4-5 days. My current total kilometres ridden for October is 337km which puts me about 10km short of Boundary Bend. Still in Victoria but getting closer to crossing the border into NSW.

Today's excitement included almost riding over the top of a curious brown snake that stood it's ground (excuse the pun) and a few furious magpies attacks. The journey continues.
