My Story

10 Oct 2019

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Can you imagine losing a child? Words can't describe what that must be like!!

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

  • We did it!!
    4 Nov 2019

    Hi,

as you know, last month, I took part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! I pedalled 517.8 km to end childhood cancer and save little lives.

And so, with your help - we raised $4,245,079!!! 💵👌🏼😘👍🏼

That's truly awesome - so I wanted to say a HUUUGE thanks!!!!

Why did I do this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia. Every 2 minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer. The challenge was tough (made even more so after my little CRASH in the first week), but it was nothing compared to what these innocent kids face every day of their lives as they battle this terrible disease. Nothing!!

Kids should be living life, NOT fighting for it.

Any further donations can be made through my fundraising page to support cancer research and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve:

    https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/GlennMcIntosh/d

All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Again, thanks so much for your support, these donations make all the difference.!!!

    Glenn

  • update from people at the Great Cycle Challenge
    23 Oct 2019

    G'day!

I just got an email from the Head of Fundraising at Children's Medical Research Institute, and a fellow Great Cycle Challenge rider. I thought he'd mentioned a couple of things that really help me put this all into perspective worthy of sharing...

    "...So far this year:

484 families have heard the painful words, "your child has cancer".

We've lost 126 little lives to this terrible disease.

These families deserve more effective treatments and better outcomes for their kids. And that's why cancer research is so important to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. Our month of riding will make a huge difference to the children, siblings, parents and families affected by cancer, as we all strive for the day when childhood cancer is a distant memory.

As you get out on our bike over these next 8 days, please remember these kids as we climb those hills and turn those pedals..."

Not sure about you but that's pretty powerful stuff for me!!!

I'm forever grateful for my life and for that of my family. Remembering some of the poor little ones who are doing it tough (or who have lost their fight) is really what's keeping me moving forward.!

    Thanks again 👌🏼😘👍🏼

  • Getting there...
    15 Oct 2019

    Hi all, quick update...

Well, I clocked up a pretty decent ride on Sunday (~210k's) which I'm pretty stoked about. What I hadn't factored into the equation was the high-speed crash I had whilst coming off the back of Mt Mee.! I had been feeling pretty good all day and absolutely LOVING the descent. That is, until I hit some leaves/debris left from Saturday's storm. Then... well, game over Rover!

Skin off here and there (arm, elbow, ribcage, knee etc) but the bike was ok so I decided to push on and ride home (on an adrenaline high) 🥴🥴🥴

I've been to see the Doctor and thankfully nothing's broken so I count myself as pretty lucky.

Anyway, I reckon the next few weeks will be a wee bit painful - especially when I bend my knee on the bike - but I WILL complete my goal of 500k's for this event for sure. My pain and suffering pales in comparison to what some of these kids go through!

Anyway, just wanted to let you know things are still moving forward and to again, say thanks all for your support.. bloody legends! ;-)

Oh, and if you want to check out the ride on Strava: go to:

    https://strava.app.link/d0SS80SkN0

    Cheers, Glenn 🍻

  • Fundraising update
    11 Oct 2019

Hi, thanks so much to all who have supported me so far. I thought I’d share with you some words from the event organisers that really sum up how amazing your support has been. The words about the families affected by this REALLY sh*tty disease to me really powerful:

“It's incredible. THANK YOU so much for your butt-kicking efforts to give kids like Ruby, Jess and Ivy-Jean the brighter futures they deserve.

Yesterday was a record day for us, and we can't believe the results! The day was crazy, but then the support really climbed into the night, it was so exciting to watch!

We've also been receiving lots of calls and messages from our families who were so excited to see everyone taking action on the day. Many of them were glued to the site all day and they could not believe it either. 😊

And that's just one more great thing you've done through your fundraising efforts...you've given these families a reason to smile, and more importantly, you've given them hope for a cancer-free future and the support they need to continue their fight to beat this awful disease.

For that, we cannot thank you enough.!!”

So thank you all..! Again, I/we really do appreciate your support.!!
