Frank Muggridge, Beryl Denison and Hannah Zischke!

I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge not because I know a child who has been diagnosed with Cancer but because my Grandma and Grandad both died from Cancer. I watched the treatment and the disease take over their bodies and the spark that they once had slowly diminished. Seeing this happen to them makes me wonder how children are expected to keep fighting this disease every day and keep their happy spirits. Their families deserve to be raising their children at home, playing with them and enjoying their lives, not fighting for them to see their next birthday. This is why I am riding. I have seen what Cancer can do to the spirit and the body of an adult, it horrifies me to think what it can do to a child.

  • A Message from Hannah's Mum :)
    12 Oct 2017

"A year ago our baby girl was diagnosed with cancer. An insidious disease that not only caused Hannah horrific pain and suffering but shattered our world in an unimaginable way.

Cancer has taken so much from us. Hannah may be in remission but there is always that lurking reality of relapse. It's taken a part of our children's innocence. I will never forget 4 year old Jack asking if Hannah was going to die. It's taken away a piece of our complacent hearts and left fear and worry.

Cancer is a daily reminder that things don't happen for a reason, that children may fight the bravest battle but still grow their wings, and that no matter how much you want to be able to control it, it actually controls you.

We hurt. A lot. We still cry. Often. We still are scared shitless. We hope like crazy that the worst of it is behind us and that Hannah never has to go through all of this again but the "what if" is always on our minds.

I have learnt that as a parent our darkest days are often the times our children need us the most. The impossible task of giving when you have nothing left to give.

We have survived this year through the generous support and love of many. Thank you to everyone who has helped in anyway. A special thanks to my family and to my incredible friend Jo - you guys just continue to keep picking us up and carrying us when it gets really hard.

Hannah - you are a superstar. A beautiful, strong-willed fighter who is truly delightful. We love you baby girl and will help you fight this with every last breath we have xxx "

  • A message from Hannah's mum!
    24 Sep 2017

Hi everyone, here is a quick message from Hannah's mum Nicole with an update about Hannah's health and wellbeing. Thank you Nicole for sharing this with us all! xx

"We have finally made it home! Here's a pic of Hannah today at the Starlight room doing her most favourite thing, craft, while waiting on her blood results. Hannah absolutely loves craft and is kept well entertained at the hospital through the hospital school program, the play therapist and the Starlight room who all keep her very well supplied with craft activities.

Hannah continues to be really well. She is due to have a bone marrow biopsy and her port (a device placed under her skin on her chest which gives direct access to major veins near her heart for her IV chemo) removed next month. This will mean another anaesthetic and all day fasting which is hard for little people.

Hannah is also working on overcoming her fear of needles in her arm for blood tests. At the moment she allows her blood to be tested by accessing her port, however that is soon not going to be an option. She gets extremely distressed by the needles in her arm and it makes her very anxious. She will continue to have fortnightly blood tests for at least the next year. "

Please keep Hannah in your thoughts, she needs the positive energy! Thank you for being so brave Hannah, you are amazing!

  • Hannah's journey
    5 Sep 2017

So here is a little bit more information about the amazing Hannah and the journey she has been on over the past 12 months.

This is an email I received from Hannah's brave mum, we have to remember that though Hannah is fighting this disease, her family is also fighting it with her.

"Hannah was a healthy, happy and bright 2.5 year old with no significant medical history. She woke one morning with a stiff leg and a limp. Thinking it was nothing to be worried about, we took her to the GP "just in case". He confirmed that it was unlikely to be an issue but ordered a blood test as he noted that she was pale. The following day we were sent straight to the emergency department at the Royal Darwin Hospital and within hours our world was crushed when we were told that they were quite sure that Hannah had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL).

Whilst coming to terms with this life threatening diagnosis, our family was also thrown into turmoil in relation to our living situation as the NT does not have oncology service for children.

Just hours later we were flown to Adelaide where Hannah was immediately admitted to the Women's and Children's Hospital and 3 days later this diagnosis was confirmed and her intensive phase of chemotherapy commenced.

Hannah underwent 8 months of intensive chemotherapy. She had multiple blood and platelet transfusions, over 15 anaesthetics, IV chemotherapy, endless oral medications (at the most 10 in one day), trips to the emergency department to deal with complications and 10 hospital admissions. On each hospital visit (up to 3 times per week) it was necessary to have a blood test which caused her significant distress and also have her port accessed (a large needle being inserted into a device under her skin on her chest). There were many tears but also a tremendous amount of courage.

Hannah at times was her bright and bubbly self, able to still continue with normal toddler activities. However there was also extremely difficult periods where she was in pain, very lethargic and utterly miserable.

Hannah has been surrounded in love and support throughout her journey. Not only has she had her dad and I at her side constantly, she has also got her 5 year old brother helping her to "kick cancers butt". Jack has been an incredible support and whilst he has experienced a huge amount of change and uncertainty, he has been a true comfort and superhero for Hannah.

We have been supported in every possible way by family and friends through emotional, practical and financial support. We have also benefited in an incredible way from numerous charities that support families who have children with cancer.

We have been surrounded with incredible doctors, nurses, social workers, play therapists, pharmacists and support staff who have made Hannah's treatment as smooth and manageable as possible. But I've always been acutely aware that it's the researchers who we are unlikely to ever meet that have made her survival possible. We literally owe Hannah's life to people who dedicate their professional lives to finding a cure for ALL and other childhood cancers.

We have been pleased to be able to have Hannah take part in numerous research projects along the way where her cells, reactions to treatments and ultimately her cure will help those who unfortunately still have to face this ghastly disease.

Hannah is still receiving oral chemotherapy as part of a maintenance program and will do so until October 2018 (2 years from diagnosis). Her long term prognosis is quite positive but she still faces the possibility of relapse and issues arising from the high doses of chemotherapy. We can only hope that research continues to find better ways to treat and manage the impact of childhood cancer. "

She is an amazing little girl with a brave and resilient family to support her. We are riding for your Hannah!

  • Hannah's Story
    1 Sep 2017

This is a story about an amazing little girl called Hannah. In October 2016 she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. At the time Hanna and her family were living in the NT, but in order for her have access to the treatment which she required urgently, her family moved to Adelaide within a matter of hours!

Hannah has undergone 8 months of intensive chemotherapy treatment, but thankfully now this has been reduced to a maintenance program. She will be on this program until October 2018.

She has responded well to the treatment and is in good spirits! She has been unwell at times, "but on the whole, she has responded really well"

Please keep Hannah and her family in your thoughts! every little bit counts and hopefully 1 day, children like Hannah will be able to live life and not fight for it!

  • Cycling for a cause!
    31 Jul 2017

Hey everyone! I am so excited to be participating again this year in this awesome challenge.

We all know the statistics about Cancer as far as 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed at some stage in their lives, but did you know that in Australia on average 650 children (0-15 years) are newly diagnosed with Cancer every year! That's a huge number considering they make up only approximately 18% of the population.

Here's the deal, just like last year, if I reach my fundraising goal I will be increasing my distance by a KM for every $ over my goal up to $500! So at the moment I am aiming for 1000km with a $1000 goal, but if I hit $1500 then its 1500 km, you get the idea.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

  • 3rd Year Running
    23 Jul 2017

So this is my 3rd year running doing the Great Cycle Challenge! I am really looking forward to raising money to help these amazing kids. They deserve to live life not fight for it! Bring on October!!!

    Posted 118 days ago
  • 23 Jul 2017

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

    Thanks for your support.
