My Story

1 Oct 2018

This October, I am taking part in my 4th Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So, I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives. Let's kick cancer's butt!!!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

    31 Oct 2018

Well, that's the 2018 Great Cycle Challenge done and dusted! To wrap things up, I did a short ride out to Cooee lights and back. Yes - I wore the tutu. A young man called out "I love you! I love YOU!" Sure - he probably says that to every middle-aged woman he sees, riding a mountain bike, dressed in a rainbow tutu . . . but I'll accept his enthusiastic expression of affection!

2018 GCC statistics: 445 kilometres ridden, $2100 raised

Overall statistics: 1855 kilometres ridden, $7090.49 raised

THANK YOU TO EVERY ONE OF MY SPONSORS - I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR AWESOME SUPPORT!!!

    30 Oct 2018

Cruised out to Fossil Bluff from Wynyard High School, then back through the burbs, to the wharf, the beach, then back to Taiko. 3 days is a long break off the bike, but I eventually settled into a rhythm. PS: Yes, it was ride #20 - I put the wrong number on the map when I saved it.

Well, my final ride of the 2018 GCC is done and dusted - out to Wynyard and back before 11 am. Mellow Yellow and I have covered 428k these past few weeks, and all going well, my next ride should see me resplendent in a tutu. Catch you then!

    24 Oct 2018

How could I not ride on a gorgeous morning like this? Heading out along the highway to Sulphur Creek, I decided to ride along a road I had previously spotted from the highway. Funny how you don't see the hills until you are on your bike! My curiosity quenched, I decided to turn back after only a couple of kilometres. I then headed along beside the gorgeous Preservation Bay, to my turnaround point (oh, but it was so tempting to go just that little bit further, to Penguin).

    22 Oct 2018

Today's ride is in 2 parts - because one should not restart their phone before they have saved their ride in the app. First a gentle ride with Ali and Tilly, part way to Turners Beach. Then I headed off on a further adventure of my own, finding a new spot by the Leven River, then returning to my starting point via some lovely quiet suburban streets..

    20 Oct 2018

The legs needed turning over after yesterday's epic ride, and an hour of Taiko today. I set off just to do a quick cruise, but sometimes I just have trouble deciding when it's time to turn around. Found a new track and followed it. It was a new spot for me, and a new view of the coast - but a bit whiffy.

    19 Oct 2018

When a cruise to Sulphur Creek becomes a ride to Penguin. Even then, I couldn't stop riding. So, when I got back, I continued out to Cooee Point before heading home. I hadn't ridden for 3 days, and tomorrow will be a busy day as well.

NB: Mr Penguin is raising awareness for the McGrath Foundation. The whole town is decked out in pink.

    11 Oct 2018

With weary legs after kicking so much cancer butt yesterday, I decided this morning's pre-work ride should be short and sweet. A cruise out along the highway to warm up the legs, followed by a lap around the showground, then a ride through a sleepy Fernglade. Ahh . . . the serenity!

    11 Oct 2018

I kicked cancer's butt all the way to Wynyard and back. Awesome day, awesome ride, and the wind was mostly kind to me - even giving me a little push just when I needed it . . . or was it the wind?

Bike gear is now all in the washing machine, so I can keep on pedalling tomorrow. I have now covered 231kilometres!

THANKS TO MY AWESOME, AMAZING, INCREDIBLE, GENEROUS SPONSORS, I HAVE NOW PASSED MY $1000 FUNDRAISING GOAL!!! Watch out for my tutu and fairy lights ride, coming soon!!! I don't think you will miss me!!!

    8 Oct 2018

Yay! My 2018 jersey arrived in today's mail, and with an extra hour of daylight, there was time for a quick ride after work. Unfortunately, the extra hour of sunlight was stolen by clouds, but I still made it back before 7, in Tassie's gorgeous twilight.

I've now ridden 170k, and my dashboard tells me that this equates to 43% of my goal! Yay!!! I think tomorrow will be a rest day.

Skipped out of Taiko early, to squeeze in a quick ride. Found a lovely country road, then returned along a section of the highway that I previously hadn't ridden. I've now pedalled 149k of my 400k goal.

  • Ride #7 - Ali's Birthday ride
    6 Oct 2018

I am very proud of my friend Ali, who is participating in her first Great Cycle Challenge. Ali is riding an eTrike, with her assistance dog, Tilly, in the rear basket. Even though Ali suffers from chronic back pain, and this is an electric trike, Ali refuses to use the battery assistance during the challenge. The trike is really heavy, so this takes a lot of extra effort on Ali's behalf. I am really proud of her integrity and perseverance, and today she did her longest ride yet - on her birthday! It was an awesome day, and we had a picnic by the beach. I won't mind if you want to sponsor Ali: https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/AlisounElder

In near perfect conditions, I tootled along the highway, to Wynyard and back, enjoying the sunshine. I have exceeded my week's 100 kilometre goal, with 2 days to spare! Every kilometre I do for the rest of the week, will be a bonus kilometre in the bank.

This afternoon's ride was cooler and breezier, but I had awesome company. Ali and Tilly are participating in their first challenge - Ali on the pedals, and Tilly in the basket of Ali's trike. We travelled along the bike paths of Ulverstone, out past the rowing club, and back.

Feeling awesome after this morning's ride!!! First, my bum didn't wince when I hit the saddle at 5:45am. Then, despite earlier showers, I didn't even get wet! (apart from a strip up my bum and lower back, from the wet road). Keep the donations rolling in, and when I reach my $1000 fundraising goal, I will do a ride in a tutu, with my bike adorned with lights!!!

Today's ride had to be a quick one, after work, and before Taiko practice. So from Wynyard High School, I headed out to Bruce's into a headwind, then a cruise back. I paused for a selfie of Table Cape shrugging off a cloak of cloud.

  • 1st ride done and dusted
    30 Sep 2018

Well, after a false start, returning from Wivenhoe to change back into my old shoes (no prizes for guessing who didn't check and tighten her cleats after a 20k test ride in new shoes); my first ride of 22k is complete. Then I found that MapMyRide hasn't synced to the GCC app - probably because I seem to have deleted the GCC app, and Google continues to hold me hostage, not allowing me to download my NAB, myATO, and now the GCC apps. Now for the good news: Thanks to 3 new sponsors, I have exceeded my $500 goal . . . guess I now need to increase that to $1000, and get serious about kicking cancer's butt!!!

Wow!!! My sponsors are my inspiration, and the children are my motivation. Thinking of what little Ariel and Ivy-Jean are going through (and all the other children currently fighting for their lives) - this is what will keep my legs turning those pedals. There will be no headwind strong enough, or hill steep enough, to stop me getting back on that seat. Bring on October!!!
