My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it. And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer. Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. Together, we can save little lives. Thanks for your support.

  • Weekend # 4 - Ferntree Gully to Melbourne completed :)
    28 Oct 2019

The weekend started with helping a mate fix the brakes on his car. We had a BIG night on Saturday evening, which was not ideal preparation for the Sunday ride.

Sunday morning started with a climb up the 1,000 steps, to get the heat pumping, followed by brunch ahead of the ride into the city on the linked pathways.

The elevation profile was great, although there were a few uphills, generally it was an easy ride, made more challenging with the rain. I was glad to make the 7pm Warrnambool train, and arrived home at 8:30 pm, having completed the last weekend adventure for 2019. Thanks to everyone for your support, all goals for this year have been reached, and is much appreciated. Cheers, Richard

  • Planning the final weekend to Upper Ferntree Gully
    24 Oct 2019

This weekend, I look forward to catching up with a long time friend in Upper Ferntree Gully. I'll catch the train out and maybe have a little ride on Saturday - but after long overdue social catch up, I'll cycle the trails back to the city and head back to Geelong on the train. Looking forward to the final weekend, the inevitable big overdue social occasion and completing the trip to close this year's account. I just hope the trains are running & will accept me & my bike :)

  • Weekend # 3 - Completed - another 107 in the account :)
    19 Oct 2019

Well, tody didn't go exactly to plan. I completed the river ride with the guys and headed out towards Anglesea, due road works I took a different route than planned, and heaps of head wind, and rain was challenging, not to mention road corrugations.

I followed the highway for the last section into Anglesea, where I had a massive feed at Diggers vegie kitchen!

I was feeling a little low on energy - so I decided to come back instead of camping over. Glad to be home and have weekend # 3 under the belt :)

  • Weekend # 3 - Planning in progress
    14 Oct 2019

For the third weekend of the month, I plan to accompany Cycling Geelong around the river, and after a coffee, set off for an Anglesea loop - cloning the mapmy ride - Anglesea 100 Cycling Geelong 27th Oct 2013. While at Anglesea, I will be visiting the best vegan restaurant in the region - @diggersvegiekitchen.

I might make it all the way round, or I might end up camping - Let's see how the weather is, and how the legs hold up! - I know I will definitely be back in Geelong for @transitionstreetsgeelong event on Sunday at Vines Road (sold out I believe - yeah!)

People are welcome to join the ride, part ride or wave as I pass by :)

  • Weekend # 2 completed :)
    13 Oct 2019

So, us 3 amigo's (learning Spanish), set out for Birregurra from Barwon river boat sheds on Friday at 4:30, fully loaded, we made it to Winchelsea, and as it was getting dark, we decided to make camp there. We had a great big cooked breakfast and got to Birregurra by mid-day. The festival was amazing, however, after 4 hours we set off back to Geelong. It was dark when we got back, but feeling good we both put in many kms for the Great Cycle Challenge, and had fun on the way :)

  • Weekend # 2 - Birregurra music festival
    10 Oct 2019

I'm delighted that I will be joined this weekend by German Galvan Pichardo, and his Son Olin, only 36 months of age! We aim to head out to Birregurra for the music festival, leaving Friday at 4 pm, and if all goes well setting up camp by 7:30. Music festival on Saturday should be interesting before returning on Saturday night. It should add another 150 kms to the cumulative count for the month. We are both doing the great cycle challenge - so if you are feeling inspired, consider donating to him at the following link -https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/GermanPichardo

  • Sponsorship doubled on Thursday
    8 Oct 2019

How good is this? I just received a message to say that any sponsorship received on Thursday 10th of October will be matched up to a limit of $700k+, so if you were thinking of supporting this cause, Thursday would seem like a good day to double down your sponsorship!

  • Queenscliff weekend trip
    7 Oct 2019

So my weekend account opened with a ride around the river with Cycling Geelong, followed by rail trail to Clifton Springs for a transition street catch up, and then trailed into Queenscliff. After an overnight camp it was a ride into the head wind all the way back to Geelong. Really enjoyed the whole ride, and looking forward to next weekend!

  • Amazing rockery in Eastern Park
    3 Oct 2019

I know there is a story about the rocks in Eastern Gardens which I visited on my jaunt around town to get up a few more Kms. The rocks are laid out in a pattern, and maybe they can be seen from the You Yangs or something?

    1 Oct 2019

We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Cycling the esplanade and enjoying the views on this first day of October is a great way to open the rides this year.

Hopefully we'll have a month of awesome weather like this to complete all rides safely. Good luck to all riders!

    29 Sep 2019

Each year Cycling Geelong has a weekend away for social cycling. This year we went to O'Keefes' rail trail in Heathcote. We've just completed 100kms over the last few days - a great lead in to the GCC over the next month

  • Join me for a Ride to Queenscliff for the first weekend in October
    19 Sep 2019

So the first week-end cycle is going to be to fantastic, Setting out on Saturday morning towards Queenscliffe, stopping at a friends block in Clifton Springs, for some refreshments, and engagement with a passionate group of people building closer communities in the transition street movement, then cycling through the beautiful scenery of indented heads, Swan Bay towards Queenscliff camp grounds.

After an over-night camp we'll head back to Geelong via the rail trail, and head to Humans in Geelong, while we wave at all the people participating in round the bay!

I plan to visit Humans in Geelong as a fitting end to the first trip for October - so let me know if you would like to join me on this initial ride for October
