Our Challenge

  • GCC End Game
    1 Nov 2018

Well the GCC month has come to an end although rides in November will continue to be logged and more importantly Donations can still be made until the end of November.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who joined the Port Stephens Cycle Group Team and helped us reach such an amazing total for both KMs travelled and Money raised for such a worthy cause, it has truly been inspirational.

When we first started, the goal was to raise $5000 and log 2500km, mind you there was only 3 of us then, that soon grew to 15 riders from all over Australia. Here we are at the end and the team has thus far raised $22,603.27 and collectively ridden 9282KM, what a brilliant achievement.

The money raised is truly amazing, especially when you consider how small an area (population size) we live, we could not have been so successful if it wasn't for our sponsors who kindly suported us : Murray's Brewery (Unbeliveable Support), Freedom Camper Tailers, PRD Nationwide(Shoal Bay), Kelly's finance, Poolside Davison, Dhuez Clothing, ImmersaView and PLEXSYS. Thanks must also go to all the local businesses who provided the raffle prizes for our night at the the Bay Breeze.

There have been many highlights, and I am sure each of the team will have their own special moments, however, a couple from me :

    1. Day 1 ride to Murrays brewery which turned out to be a great social event

    2. Harbour to Vine, even with the large numbe rof punctures

    3. I didn't manage to do the Tea Garden ride but did get out to see the team off. To see 16 people out there was excellent.

There were others but the biggest enjoyment has come from seeing our club (PSCG) grow with a good number of new members joining and also from the numbe rof requests for more social rides which will be coming.

Looking now at Inspiration, There is no doubt every one of the kids we rode for, and will continue to ride for, are truly inspirational. When we were out there in the howling wind and complaining (Well that was me anyway) we just had to think of the challenges facing the kids to help us toughen up. We also have a couple of inspirational people in our team...

Ben Brawn who ensureed he made his target even after the news that Annie will be facing her own challenge after her diagnosis of Breast Cancer, we are with you Ben and Annie and know its a fight you will win.

Our very own All Star Steve Bestmann who has ridden this GCC every single year since it started, great work Steve and I hope our team will be joining you next year.

In closing, I have enjoyed every minute of this challenge and look forward to doing it again next year.

  • Week 2 Update
    15 Oct 2018

    G’Day all,

Week 2 has come and gone for our Great Cycle Challenge and I must say what a week it was. Not only did we hit another fundraising target, we actually smashed through it and we are now at almost $19,000; not bad when you consider our first target was $4000. In line with the fundraising target, the team also smashed through the 5000km mark which was our initial aim( since been updated to 6500km), a great achievement!

A couple of highlights from week 2 were the Fundsraising meal at the Bay Breeze Mexican where we raised well over $500 from the raffle and auction, as well as being donated a portion of the restaurants profits for the night ( will provide the figures when we have them). The other being the Harbour to Vine ride which took us from Newcastle harbour all the way up to the beautiful Hunter Valley, it was a great experience and one I will certainly do again.

That’s it for now, other than to say please come and support the fundraiser at McDonald’s in Wednesday between 6 and 7pm

  • Week 1 is Done
    8 Oct 2018

Week 1 of the Great Cycle Challenge has come and gone and I am very pleased to announce that the team are well ahead of our fundraising, and distance aims.

On the very first day of the challenge we had a group of 15 (not all in the team) who covered distances of between 60 and 100 km with the overall team distance covered just under 700km, an amazing effort by all. We have continued to setr a cracking pace and already after the first week we have reached 50% of our monthly aim. I will leave the original target there as it will give a great indication of how much effort the team are putting in for the fight against kids cancer.

Unfortunately I was unable to make the Sponsors ride yesterday (Sunday) due to equipment malfunction, however, some of our team braved the inclement weather to get some Ks in. (See photo)

This weekend we have 2 Group rides planned with Saturday being a social ride ranging from 50KM to 100KM, there will be meeting points (Paul's Corner and Murray's Brewery) for those who want to do the shorter distance. On Sunday there is an official ride (Harbour to Vine) that some of us have entered, please feel free to join us (once you have paid your entrance fee) under the name of PSCG.

    That's all for now

  • Another Target Bites the Dust
    2 Oct 2018

    G 'Day all,

I wasn't due to post for a few days yet, however, seeing as the team has, yet again, burst through the latest fundraising target of $13500 I thought it prudent to let everyone know that we have raised the bar and our new target is $15,000, which I am sure we will meet easily.

We still have our Mexican meal on 12 October so if you are interested let Warwick or myself know and we will book you in. On top of that we also have an hour at McDonalds in Salamander Bay on 17 October so please come along and support us.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us, and to those who are planning to, show us the donation ;-).

    All the best

  • 1 Week to go until the Challenge begins
    26 Sep 2018

Hi everyone just thought I would provide an update before the team launches into the Great Cycle Challenge that will see us, as a team, aim to ride in excess of 3000kms.

As a team we have been Number 1 in Australia from the start and have, on a number of occasions, reached our fundraising target and strived for greater amounts. We have currently set our target at $10,000 and hope to exceed that before the month of October is over.

I know I have already thanked or sponsors, however, I would again like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sponsored our team and the individuals who are part of our team.

Our first Group ride will take place on Monday 1 October where we will aim to complete a ride of around 75KM that will end at our major sponsors venue, Murray's Brewery.

That is all for now, I will provide another update post the first ride.

We have already got some great prizes a $150 voucher for The Terrace Bar at Bannisters Soldiers Point,

Imagine Cruises Whale Watching for 2

2x Family Passes at Super Strike Salamander Bay

Let’s Go Adventures for the Discover Scuba Gift Certificate.

We are waiting for more local businesses to respond to our requests for items.

The raffle will be drawn at our fundraising night 12 October at Mexican at the Bay Breeze. We will be selling tickets prior to the night at $2 each, 3 for $5, 7 for $10 and 16 for $20. If you want to buy tickets it would be great if you attended the fundraising night but if you can't make it email portstephenscyclegroup@outlook.com and we will explain how we collect the money and how you get your tickets.

If anyone has any contacts and can get an item or voucher we can add to the raffle prizes.

For those interested we are able to do a raffle because the prize value is less than $30000 and the whole money raised goes directly to a registered charity.

This October, PSG is taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so we are riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support our challenge by making a donation through our fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

    Thanks for your support.
