My Story

30 Sep 2024

For the past few years, my life has been a cycle of couch gaming, sleep, work, and eating. This year, I decided to break that cycle and embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle. A month ago, I took a big step and got myself a bike to train for my first ever Great Cycle Challenge.

I am incredibly blessed to be the father of a wonderful, energetic son named Ezio. We are so grateful for the good health that we enjoy, but I know that not all families are as fortunate. This is why I am passionate about making a difference.

This October, I am participating in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer!

Cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia. Over 700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and tragically, three children lose their lives to this disease every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

I am riding and raising funds to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute in their vital work to prevent, diagnose, treat, and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page. Your contribution will help give hope to these brave kids and their families, so they can have the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thank you for your support.

  • Ride No. 1 - Oct. 1
    1 Oct 2024

Went out for a ride at 6AM in the morning. It was a lovely Spring morning. It wasn’t windy, and the temperature was just right at 11°C. Perfect morning to kick off the Great Cycle Challenge.

As I was traversing the bike path, I encountered many other cyclists who I would assume are probably commuting or also taking part in the challenge (which is nice).

I was having a good time, riding in a chill pace until the unexpected happened. Nobody warned me of the terrifying event that was about to happen.

I got swooped by a forking Magpie. I was absolutely terrified. I didn’t know what to do, so I just rode as hard and as fast as I could hoping it’ll leave me alone. After about 5 attempts at getting a crack at my head, it left me alone. Whew!

Now, my dilemma was, that path was the only way back home as well. I mean, I could circle around the long way but that will probably double or triple the distance of my ride.

So, I attempted to get sneaky. Waited for another cyclist to pass by the same area, and pray that they get swooped so I can pass through safely. (You can probably guess how that went)

Of course, the plan failed, and I still got swooped on my way back. It was as terrifying as the first time it happened.

That swooping definitely spoiled the rest of the ride. Disturbed my smooth riding and pace, and made me paranoid and look out for Magpies further down the road.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re riding the Great Cycle Challenge. Be careful with Magpie swoopings. Don’t panic, and just continue your pace. Wear protective gear such as a helmet and eye protection at all times.

With that, 15kms down. 232kms to go. 🚴🙏

    30 Sep 2024

Circa 1994, 30 years ago, at the age of 3, I had the privilege of being taught by my dad how to ride a bicycle. A skill which will stay with me forever until my legs give up on me when I grow old.

I am lucky enough to have lived through life. However, there are families who cannot say the same.

    Cancer is a menace.

I am blessed to become a father to a healthy and lovely 5 year old son, Ezio. However, I feel for those who are battling through cancer at an early stage in life. Cancer does not only affect the victim, but those around them as well. They may not get to experience the simple joys of learning how to ride a bike.

This October, I am riding the Great Cycle Challenge to give back to the community, and help those in need. This may be small in the grand scheme of things, but with your help, we can save little lives together.

    Thanks for your support!

    Michael
