  • My motivation
    3 Oct 2017

Hi everyone. So the riding has started, and just today I reached $1000 raised. With that in mind I want to introduce you to Heidi – she’s the main motivator for me jumping on my mountain bike this October and riding 250km to raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Centre helping kids who are dealing with cancer.

I went to high school with Heidi’s mum, Bianca, and we reconnected on social media earlier this year. I was saddened to see that many of Bianca’s updates were centred around her second daughter Heidi and her journey with retinoblastoma. You see behind those big gorgeous eyes lay a horrid and deadly tumour. Retinoblastoma is a threat to kid’s sight, even meaning the eye itself may be removed, because if not the cancer is deadly.

What a horrifying moment for parents when tests after “seeing black spots” revealed that their daughter’s life was in peril. Thankfully the tumour was found before it had grown enough to force Heidi’s eye to be removed – but the treatment that followed was tough and long.

I followed along on social media as Heidi underwent operations and chemotherapy and things a kid should never have to endure. I sympathised with the sensitivity to sunlight, the eye patches, heavy sunglasses and drowsy days because as a kid I underwent numerous surgeries to fix my eyes as well – though not cancer or life threatening I still distinctly remembered the discomfort eye surgery brought and the depression that settles when you can’t just be a kid.

However each photo Bianca posted was of a cheery, positive and gorgeous little girl who battled on with a huge heart.

As of the 7th of July this year Heidi finished her treatment and officially went into remission – what a fantastic story and so when I read about the Great Cycle Challenge I thought about the positive end Heidi’s story had, but also the hardness of the battle on a little life as well as the rest of the family. If I could do something to raise some money to help others get through this journey just as Heidi has then how could I not get on board!

I continue to pray for Heidi and her family as she continues to recover and regain the normal life every child should have. Join with me in praying for her, as well as all the other children suffering. Even though the riding has started, you can still sponsor me at https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/DeanSandham as well as keep up with the riding and how much I have to go to hit the 250ks!

But thanks so much for your support - this has certainly gone well beyond what I was expecting!

  • One week till it all starts
    27 Sep 2017

Well we're one week off beginning to log the 250km I've pledged to ride . I've got a whole heap of new riding gear, jersey's, helmet, backpack, and gloves - I'm raring to get on with it!

I've raised $875, but there's still a heap of time to raise some more. If you haven't yet and want to support me please do - or share with friends and family.

Let's help these kids kick cancer's butt!

  • Thanks for the overwhelming support
    18 Sep 2017

I met my goal... and still the donations keep coming in!!! Thank you all so much. It's so good to see people from so many different areas of my life (church, school, work, camps, family) all coming together here supporting ways to help kids with cancer.

I just wanted to write to those who have sponsored and again show my appreciation. I set out with a modest fundraising goal because I saw this as a personal challenge. 200km (now 250km) was a good goal for getting out and riding during October, it was a challenge I wanted to set myself, and thought if some others heard about it and donated and I made a bit of money to help kids that would be a bonus. And now I have raised $875! Well beyond what I thought I would achieve.

This has meant I reached a target goal and received a proper cycling jersey from Great Cycle Challenge. I wore it on a training ride this morning, and now I look pro enough to hopefully complete those 250km in October. I also get to publically advertise this great cause now while I am out riding.

    Thanks again!

  • Goal Reach, Challenged Updated - thanks so much
    10 Sep 2017

Thank you to all you who have donated. After finally getting the communication thing right on Friday and getting the word out the goal was passed quite quickly as people jumped on board to sponsor.

So as promised I've added another 50km to the ride total for October. I've been out on a few conditioning rides which have started to pop up on my sponsor page, but they won't count towards the goal unit October begins.

It's all a whole heap of fun... for a really good cause!!

  • 2 weeks to up my challenge to 250km
    8 Sep 2017

Hey everyone. Only $112 to go to meet my fundraising goal - and if you do it in the next two weeks then I will add an extra 50km to my cycling goal.

If you've already sponsored thank you so much - and if you want to ensure I do that extra work then share this round and get your friends to sponsor as well!!!

Such a good cause - there are so many kids out there doing it tough - and this fundraiser can really help support them!

  • Half way to goal!
    4 Sep 2017

Well people have really jumped on board to help!! Thanks!!

Today I hit 50% of my $550 goal. Which is awesome... if this keeps going I'll definitely be doing 250km instead of 200km!

I fitted a new Cateye Bicycle computer to my mountain bike today - the old one wouldn't work even with new batteries. I'm all ready to record those kilometers!

Thanks for your continued support - please share my page https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/DeanSandham with others and let's keep the support rolling in!

  • Trying to build some momentum - to raise some money for a good cause
    1 Sep 2017

    Hey everyone.

I'm sitting in a college class at the moment, and just thinking about this challenge I have signed up for. In October I've said I'll hop on my mountain bike (and hopefully a BMX I am restoring) and ride 200kms. I'm setting up some plans to do multiple 20km and 40km rides all throughout October. All the money I raise is part of the Great Cycle Challenge which is helping fight kids' cancer by giving to the Children's Medical Research Institute.

I'm gonna do the work - but I need help raising the funds, I have set a goal of raising $550. It's a modest amount, but I am still trying to see how I can get the momentum rolling to raise those funds.

Anything over $2 is tax deductible, and even the smallest donations will all add up - you can donate by visiting my online sponsorship page.

To motivate you all to give I'm willing to update my challenge... I'll give you all 3 weeks to make the $550 goal and I will add an extra 50km to my ride goal (a total of 250kms), that's at least 2 extra rides.

So the date for that is 22 September to hit the $550 goal.

All for a good cause... all of you can be involved.

    Thanks heaps.

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

    Thanks for your support.
