My Story

30 Oct 2019

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

  • Last Ride Coming for 2019
    26 Nov 2019

Well, only two more days to get to my 500 km, not sure I'll make it but will give it one hell of a go. Next year, now I have a good new bike I am going to try to get as many k's as I possibly can, as I'll be cycling every day I can until next October to keep my knees on an even keel till new ones come my way, I should, by all counts, be able to ride at least 750 km next year. That is what I may aim for if some of my top donations will give me a substantial amount more each for me to put myself in that position. The battle is on...come on and think about it Mark, c2a, etc.

  • One more week of rides
    22 Nov 2019

Oh well, this years Great Cycle Challenge is almost at an end for collections of donations and riding k's.

I'm aiming to have the original 500 km done, which will be the most I've ever had.

When my knees are finally replaced I'll know then I can go a lot further and plan a giant ride up the coast to Hervey Bay and back one of the years after. I am not kidding myself, as I'm continuing my cycling as it's doing my knees well to keep the riding up, so will have the fitness and muscle fibre for the operation therefore the will and health to do it, around 3 years after the operation, will be in my 70's but others have done it and that is a plan I've had in my mind for a long time.

Well, it's been a year of good and bad, bad first being my ever faithful Shogun bike bit the dust and failed me finally, then I had to find the money for a new bike, that being my Giant 75, different but as I've been riding it the last few weeks since picking it up, it has amazed me at it's readability and road handling prowess. Overall, I'm very happy with the donations and the people who made those donations for the KIds with Cancer, those are the people that have to be thanked, as well as those who organised this event every year, without the 3 of us doing our bit, those kids wouldn't have the chance of a better life, a life without cancer, which is an ever closer reality thanks to all this research enabled through the wonderful people who donated the $ they did through August to November. Thank you all.

  • 2019 GCC
    31 Oct 2019

I would like to personally thank all my sponsors this year, it's been a hard one to go through in many ways, but you lot have made my pain and efforts to raise this amount of money possible and thus make it easier to research a cure for childhood cancer. You are all heroes and great ambassadors for humankind in showing that the giving spirit that us Aussies are so proud of still exists.

Till another year, 2020, will be a special year for me, my first that means my k's will be upward of 500 km and $3000 to go for, and I'm hoping that the cycling I need to do each day to keep my knees going before surgery will see my health able to go that distance.

I hope all of you could do the same next year, and this time include asking your friends to help you as well.

  • Well, more that a few dollars + K's
    30 Oct 2019

I only need a few more dollars and few more k's to complete this years challenge. Not sure I'll get the $2500 but know I'll honour the revised amount of 100km for 2019. People are not into giving this year, having to work harder every year to gain funds, hope next year for a few more ideas I had over the last few days to implement to gain more sponsors.

  • Two days to go!
    29 Oct 2019

Well, there are only two days to go till the Great Cycle Challenge for 2019 has finished, BUT, not down and out. As the people of GCC have already announced, the donations are left open till end of November.

When my knees are finally replaced, then I can give it all my might, as it slows me down considerably at the moment, but that won't stop me riding for these little battlers.

You can help, pass the message on to work colleagues and friends and have them donate to make the kids happy to know, there are more people out there that care for their plight.

  • First Ride
    26 Oct 2019

Well, finally picked up my new stead today, has some troubles so back it goes for some fine tuning on Monday, but I can ride it at least. Not sure I'll complete the 300 km now, 1 week is not within my reach with my two Osteo ridden knees playing up big time. But, I'm going to try to make a dent in it as it's the kids I'm riding for, not me.

  • My New Bike
    20 Oct 2019

I should be able to start riding again middle of this week, it's horrid to think, some donate to my efforts to ride for the cause and are disappointed to see me not putting in the k's but wthout a bike it's not that easy. Well, I'm getting ready to push those pedals again when I receive my new bike, hopefully, Wednesday of this coming week. Crossing my fingers, as there is just a short time left to do my 300 km promised, but I'm determined that my knees will give me the go ahead (not fail me like they do at times) and let me pedal, pedal, pedal to reach my 300 km goal.

  • Bike Troubles
    29 Sep 2019

Oh gee, on the eve of the Great Cycle Challenge my bike dediced to die, it's not cooperating with me at all. Chain keeps coming off, gear de-railer is bent out of shape (not sure how that happened) and it's generally just not good to ride any longer.

  • Update 3
    17 Aug 2019

Well, today saw me raise over $500 already, that is a great effort by a few people who have all been publicly thanked, as they deserve the accolades, not me.

I realise not all can make a donation, but if you can it would be great, but if you can't, one thing you can do is share my link with those on your list of friends and let your friends know as well, outside Facebook. That gives just as much to these kids to know that others care enough to pass the word around, so they can get a better chance of a much better life, one without cancer.

  • Update 2
    16 Aug 2019

Well, it's now bee 2 weeks since donations have been allowed to come in, and I'm surprised I've hit over the $400 mark already. I urge all to make a donation to help these young lives lead a normal life, as all donations go to research into a cure for childhood cancer, one day there just may be that no child should have to put up with what these young champions do.

  • Riding for Kids With Cancer
    5 Aug 2019

Even though both my knees are in the final stages of Osteo Arthritis and being both replaced, it pales into insignificance when presented with the tenacity some of these little people have when faced with the biggest fight of their little lives.

You can help me help them by digging deep and donating some wonderful amount toward the research into childhood cancer.
