I'm Riding For

Grandma, my sister and my 3 grandchildren

I’m riding for my grandchildren, Georgie, Billie and Otis because I want them to have the happiest childhood they can possibly have. And I’m riding for my wife and my sister because they both had to battle cancer. Too many people have to battle cancer and when they are just kids it is even worse. I want any of my family that face cancer to kick it in the butt.

My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

This year I’m starting by riding my famous Tractor bike whenever I can. But I hope to get back on my road bike to clock up some serious kilometres as the month goes by.

The Croc Rockers team is back for the challenge. While we only have three riders at the moment, we’ll all do our best - and will welcome any recruits. Our marquis rider - Crikey Cadel, the world’s most notorious cycling crocodile - isn’t expected to ride this year, but is part of our inspiration, as always.

A day of kicking butt

I’m blogging this as October 7 draws to an end.

Today has been awesome for my team and me.

While I didn’t get to add to my kilometres tally, our fundraising took off. That’s because it was the day when donations were matched by the major sponsors of the Challenge. I did not promote my fundraising until today in an effort to optimise the amount raised. So, my total raised has gone from $0 this morning to over $600 by the time the “matching donation” period came to an end. And that’s before the matching dollars are added in. Hopefully, they’ll all get matched and push my total above $1000 and the team close to $2000. We’ll have to wait and see because I suspect that as in previous year’s the cap (this year it’s $800 000 Australia wide) will be reached and the donation matching will be a pro rata reduction, not an actual dollar for dollar match.

Nevertheless, I’ve been buoyed by the great generosity and support that I received from donors.
