My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

  • New life
    4 Oct 2020

In late March, I was teaching online from home, learning a new way of teaching, developing some new skills - but not doing much else. I had ballooned to 109kg and was going to keep gaining weight as I was eating too much crap and not exercising.

One day I jumped on my old mountain bike, grabbed my Garmin Edge Bike Computer and went for a 5km ride. It was easy - and I thought I should do this more - and I did. My 5kms became 10km, then 15km and even 20km. But I found it really hard on the mountain bike so I started looking around for a second hand road bike online - and found a bargain - which has really helped me with my riding. I then started progressing further up the Blue Mountains - first to Linden & back (30km), then Woodford (35km), then Lawson (42km), Bullaburra (50km), Leura (60km), then 3 Sisters in Katoomba (80km) and eventually Evan’s Lookout in Blackheath (100km). This cycling was becoming an addiction - and along with eating better, reducing alcohol intake (well only on weekdays😂), the kilos started coming off. At last weigh in I was 97kg but will continue to drop the kegs. I’ve now got the cleats which is making it even easier - although a few stacks already.

Midway through my new lifestyle, I read about the Great Cycle Challenge. This really excited me as I found I could put my new found love of cycling to even better use, something bigger than even what I was achieving - raising money to find a cure for kid’s cancer - this has pushed me to keep cycling, even when I’ve been tired and busy and just not feeling like it. Onwards and upwards and let’s do it!

  • Loving the rides
    29 Aug 2020

I am loving my new addiction of cycling - helped me cope with isolation and move away from turning into a fat blob - now I am busy back at work I'm finding less time to ride but want to do more - finding little ways to get my rides in - but want to get some bigger rides in again
